Being a complex art form with a universal language dance has always played a crucial role in the history of European Capitals of Culture. Building on the diverse dance traditions of Pécs, Ballet Pécs launched a new and progressive dance festival in 2007 as an official event of the Pécs 2010 - European Capital of Culture programme series. The Pécs International Dance Festival was created and founded by Vincze Balázs.

The festival is funded by the National Cultural Fund and the Ministry of Human Capacities
